Oh geez...

Anyone know what's going on out there?!

I can't believe this... was there really nothing we could do to stop this? How are they even doing it?! Seemed like it was healers at first but then it got less picky later.

Alright, who all is still left out there? Maybe we should try to regroup or something before... I don't wanna think about it. How about just soon? I'm on my way to Team Science headquarters now. If I don't make it there... No, I'll just see everybody there, yeah!?

So, we could be looking at some kind of Manhattan Island sized alternate universe? That's one theory that never occurred to me. Can't even think of how they did it, but considering all the other stuff they've pulled off, it's not exactly a stretch.

How's everybody doing after that last smash-up?

Did anybody else check out that weird smoke the other day? That was some fierce smelling stuff, worse than a certain incident my freshman year involving sulfuric acid and a homemade smoke bomb, but I had to try and check it out. I haven't learned much about it yet, though, especially since I don't have much of a lab to speak of these days. Haven't found the right place to set up yet...

Wooah that was weird, just experiencing some entopic phenomenon... seeing stars I mean.

Don't feel so good now...

Should probably... lie down, I think. Talk to you later.

Oh, hey there tiny Isaac Newton! Why are you so small?

Woah woah!

I just registered something about a 4.8 on the richter scale, and now all I'm getting off this network is chaos!! That's way stronger than our usual monster visits.

From the network, it sounds like we've got another monster, possibly made from a person and...

[pause]

What I really want to ask is what the hell just happened, but I think more imporant are, is everyone ok and what can I do to help?

Analysis can come later.

All right, time for a Theseus Mission update! I know we've got quite a few of you guys working on it. Think we'll be ready to send it into the realm of the beast soon? I cleared out an entire external drive to save the video data, if all goes well of course.

I wish we could make sense of that blackout. It's frustrating to have so much stuff happen and not know why. Anybody else ever feel like a mouse that a cat found and it's just batting you around before making you dinner? It feels kinda like that. Gives me the creeps.

...

Yeesh.

Oh, and Mac, I had this crazy dream yesterday! You disappeared and when I asked if anybody had seen you, they didn't even know who I was talking about. For some reason, NYU was still there, and I went to your room to look for you, but the room was empty except for a roll of duct tape and a map. Weird, huh?

In 1895, inventor and all around genius Nikola Tesla's laboratory was destroyed by a fire that took out the entire building that housed it. He lost countless plans and inventions. I feel a little like that. The university was more than just place to live. It had supplies and equipment that I don't know if we'll ever get back. I know it's kinda cheesy, but it represented the ability to continue studying the world. I mean, that's what Universities are supposed to be all about: gathering information, sharing it, storing it, passing it on. Nothing could keep us down, not even hideous creatures of unknown origin. Shoot, with that monster and all the weird stuff going on around here, that just meant there was that much more to study! But now it's flattened, and I guess what I'm trying to say is that it was a wake up call. Some of that stuff... we're just not gonna be able to get it back.

.....

But anyway, to go back to my original story, so despite that set back Tesla went on to win the "War of the Currents" against Thomas Edison, file the first basic radio patent, and invent the spark plug, along with countless other inventions and discoveries that made so much of what we have today possible.

Granted, he was a genius with a photographic memory, but my point is, it's time to get a move on.

There might still be some private labs with some equipment, if we're lucky, and we're just gonna have to be more careful from now on.

Alright, Team!? Sorry for losing it for a while.

But we can still do this. I think it's about time we get the Theseus Mission rolling and send a little robot friend into Central Park.

Oh and by the way, did anyone get anything useful from that weird transmission? All I got out of it was that it came from off the island somehow, and then it errored out. Anybody?

I just had a thought, guys. A real interesting thought.

We've been sending rovers to Mars for years now because we can't go there ourselves, right? And in Egypt on excavations, robots with cameras were used to explore tunnels and crevasses that were too small for people to fit through, as well as extremely deep waters.

We can't get anywhere near Big Mommy's nest in central park.

What if we all put our heads together and made our own rover? It could answer a lot of questions, and no one would have to put themselves at risk.

Well guys and gals? What do you say?
cool dude
Woah, hey!

I'm back and dusty but unharmed ok, sorry about that!

But check it out, I got some great video of both our monsters! I've been looking it over (and over and over and over) and here's a few things I noticed:

First of all, the new guy isn't quite as big as old Gargantua maternus and he's (I say he, but who knows what the things real gender is) darker and a bit scrawnier. I've got a couple theories about it. It could be some kind of sexual dimorphism - he's a different sex than Big Mommy, and therefore looks different. Another possibility is that he's malnourished, possibly competing for food (and losing) with Big Mommy.

Oh and here's another thing. Y'know how every time Big Mommy comes around she leaves a trail of crabs behind her? Well the new guy didn't drop any! IN fact, when I zoomed in, there wasn't a thing on him. Weird right? Before, I used to think the crabs were some kind of monster lice, but then why doesn't the new guy have them? Haven't got any theories on that yet.

If anybody wants to check out the video I got to give this some more thought, I'd be glad to share!

Two? Two? TWO?!

Th... This is huge! I mean obviously they're huge, but I mean... It's huge!

I've gotta get some footage of this!

[loud clattering]

camera camera camera camera.... THERE!

All right, I'll be back!

This stinks!

Well, ok, to be fair, in a literal sense this stinks less, since we've got water back. But this whole no food thing? Yeah. That's bad. I'm about to start taking shots of pure glucose over here.

Oh and our buddies with the graffiti sure aren't any help. "Have a bite" huh? Of what? Our own limbs? Each other? Like that's gonna happen. At least, I don't think it will. I hope it doesn't. Maybe we should all sign anti-cannibalism pacts. Geez would ya listen to me? I'm delirious!

Ok, ok ok.

So right now I'm torn. I was planning those Christmas lights, right? But now, with food supplies as low as they are, is it better to conserve those extra calories that would get used setting them up, or just go for it so we're not just sitting around thinking about being hungry?

What do you think, guys?

Ow... my head hurts... alot. The heck happened to Sunday? I really like Sundays!

Oh. And it's cold. Like really cold. Like is this what killed the dinosaurs cold. Ok, maybe not that bad. At least none of us are cold blooded. Unless some of you are? I don't even know anymore! Can't even think right, my head hurts. My everything feels weird. I haven't felt like this since that time I hooked up a van de graff generator to a go kart engine.

We at least still have electricity, so worse comes to worse we can use our stoves for heat.

Oooh... oh dang. we don't have water either, huh? And no gas. Can't even run a bunsen burner in this place. Maybe there's some propane tanks somewhere on campus, I'll have to look. Probably not a good idea for heating, but there's basic equipment for distilling in the Chemistry lab so maybe I can get some of those going to get clean water.

I wonder how the power got shut off in the first place, and more importantly, if it's something we can fix.

[whispering conspiratorially]
Hey Mac, Doc! I just got an idea!

It's nothing really important exactly, but I think it might really raise morale around here, with Christmas coming up and all. Plus it's something I've always wanted to do but never got around to, y'know how it goes...

If you guys are up for it, I think we could pull of something really cool!

Heh. heh heh.

EDIT: Opening this up to Ema Skye and Jeff Andonuts, if you're out there! I mean, not that you wouldn't be since we're all stuck... [clears his throat] Anyway! A little bird - that is, my buddy MacGyver - says you guys are into science and might wanna help out with things. Let me know if you do!

Woah hey, so...

No body. Monster's back. But I've still got all my samples! And it's Friday? I mean, I'm all about Fridays but this means we skipped Thanksgiving and that's just not fair.

I'd say the the Friday mishap was just some kind of computer hack (of Science!) except I sure feel like I slept through an entire day.

My hypothesis about our monster is that she's got some kind of super-fast healing ability, and that new monster is actually the same monster and we really did sleep through the whole day, while she healed undisturbed. Not too bad.

Any other ideas?

DID YOU KNOW THAT...

The crab monsters aren't really like crabs at all!

Really, they're more like bugs - grasshoppers and spiders - and a group of creepy crawlies known as Solpugida. Soul-Pyoo-gi-da! Also known as Camel Spiders, Wind Scorpions, or Sun Spiders. They're like spiders, but they've got ten legs - just like our monstrous neighbors. The legs are arranged in a complete different way though. Camel Spiders' legs are all in a single row. Our crabs have three pairs of lower legs they use to run, and two pairs on their backs that can be used for grabbing like arms.

Lucky they don't have opposable thumbs right?

Like spiders and grasshoppers, they can crawl up walls and cling to ceilings, and they can jump huge distances! However they aren't built the same as spiders and grasshoppers at all. So how do they do it? Well, we need to see one in action. And the only way to do that is to catch one. You guys ready!? I know I am!

NOW YOU KNOW.

Hey, check this out! New York's been attacked by a giant alien monster!

Well, ok, that's not exactly news. But did I at least get your attention?

No one knows exactly what it is or where it came from, but if we think about it, we can figure a few things out about where it came from.

First there's the easy stuff – it has to be similar to Earth in temperature and atmosphere or it wouldn't be able to survive here! The planet also has to have a ton of water, since it lives partially underwater and, well, look at the thing! It's huge!

Not too bad, right? But there's so much more stuff we could find out if we could get close enough to see. It must eat enormous amounts of food every day – it's bigger
than a Blue Whale, and those can eat 8,000 pounds of krill in a single day. Eight thousand pounds! That's like, over two and half Lamborghinis!

Come to think of it, has anybody even seen it eat?

We should be able to use science to learn so much more about the alien than we know now, like how are those pesky crab monsters related to Big Mommy, or as I like to call her, Gargantua maternus? Are they clones or offspring, or are they an unrelated species that traveled along with it, like pilot fish and sharks? With some DNA, we could find out. That is, if we could get any DNA. Anybody want to try and get a sample?

.... Anybody?

.... OK, me neither. But if she drools on you and you somehow miraculously survive, you've gotta bring me that drool.
